Resumen
This article reviews the marriage relationship between Javiera Carrera Verdugo and Pedro Díaz de Valdés, based on their letters exchanged from 1810 to 1824. The study analyses the discourses, gender roles, subjectivities and practices that defined this relationship. The hypothesis proposes that this couple faced the tension between the marital ideal derived from the Christian cultural tradition and the instability of the political circumstances of a transition period in Chile, going through a process that involved changing traditional gender roles in practical and discursive levels. The research seeks to contribute to the assessment of Javiera Carrera as a protagonist of the Chilean independence process, as well as to the knowledge of her biography from a cultural and daily life perspective.
