Resumen

This work concerns the influence of alumina particles on copper foams and their mechanical properties. Foams were produced with the space holder method. Green compacts were prepared from the mixtures of copper, space holder and alumina powders by applying a pressure of 200 MPa. Foams were successfully obtained with NaCl as the space holder (50 v/v%). The synthesis of copper foams was achieved under the conditions of (i) 790°C for 2 h and (ii) 850°C for 4 h. Alumina particles of two different sizes (1 and 0.01 μm) were tried in this work with different volume fractions (2 and 4 v/v%). The structural characteristics and mechanical properties of the foams were analyzed using optical, scanning electron microscopy and compression testing. The yield strength of the foam increased from 3 to 6 MPa when the volume fraction of alumina particles increased. Due to porosity, the elastic modulus values of the foams were decreased when compared with pure copper.
