LOS JESUITAS Y LA MÚSICA EN LAS CELEBRACIONES DE ASUNCIÓN DEL PARAGUAY DURANTE LA COLONIA: ADAPTACIONES LOCALES DEL «MODO DE PROCEDER»

The Jesuits' «way of proceeding» provided the ideal setting for adaptations in musical practices in the Colegios they founded in colonial Spanish America. This resulted in an intriguing contrast between norms and practices, evident in the Jesuits' participation in processions and the music of certain urban festivities. In this article, I will examine the specific characteristics of the Jesuits' musical presence in colonial Paraguay's capital city, Asunción, which emerged from these tensions. To this end, I will consider how the Order actively involved itself in the city's festivities and promoted its own celebrations, such as those of Saint Ignatius and Saint Francis Xavier. I will also examine the Order's relations with other orders, such as the Mercedarians.
