Resumen
This article put forward an interpretation of El infarto del alma (1994) by Diamela Eltit y Paz Errázuriz, a work about the patients of the psychiatric asylum of Putaendo, from a double perspective. On one hand, the shifting of the idea of a separation or difference between mentally ‘sane’ and ‘ill’ people, implying a critique to the collective mental categorization and representation on which stands the very concept of unsound mind and the confinement that follows. On the other hand, the stress on the temporal dimension, seen as an environment where it is possible to meet the other person, centred in the artist’s perception and creation in Eltit’s case, and tuned on an egalitarian relationship between the psychiatric person and the photographer in Errázuriz’s case.
