Abstract

It has been shown that bariatric surgery has important effects on the body image [[]BI], however the samples used are mostly female. Objective: To perceptions and experiences of young men about the changes in their body image after undergoing bariatric surgery. Method: Qualitative, exploratory-descriptive and cross-sectional study. Semi-structured interviews were administered to four males between 24 and 27 years old undergoing bariatric surgery in health care centres of Santiago de Chile. Participants were selected and recruited via snow ball technique. Open coding of Grounded Theory was used to analyse discourses. Results: Categories associated with the experiences pre and post-surgery and expectations around the procedure emerged. Before surgery, participants would avoid awareness about BI dissatisfaction as well as the activities intended to improve the condition. Participants become conscious of the importance of their appearance, fitness and health after the surgery and they highlight some conflicts those aspects cause them, including the assimilation of the changes of the body image and habits. Conclusion: Experiences linked to the BI are relevant for treatment adherence and satisfaction, and necessary to address within the psychological, psychiatric and nutritional support.
