Abstract
Psychological temporality constitutes a structural dimension of human experience and plays a central role in the construction of personal meaning, identity, and psychological distress. Although there is extensive evidence of alterations in the experience of time across various psychopathological conditions, its explicit integration into case formulation in psychotherapy has been scarcely developed. The aim of this article was to review and synthesize the available scientific literature on the incorporation of psychological temporality into case formulation in adult psychotherapy. To this end, a narrative review of peer-reviewed articles published between 2005 and 2025 was conducted, including studies written in English and Spanish that explicitly addressed psychological temporality within case formulation models or psychotherapy process research. The results allowed the identification of eight articles and the recognition of two case formulation models that explicitly incorporate psychological temporality as a core clinical-organizing dimension: the Reconstruction of Psychological Distress framework and the Evolutionary Case Formulation model. Overall, the findings suggest that psychological temporality represents a clinically relevant dimension for case formulation in psychotherapy, although its explicit presence in clinical models remains limited.
