Abstract

This article studies how the early experiences of state-building in Spanish America affected the forging of an antirepublican imaginary by Spanish conservatives. It focuses on the period that began with the initiation of diplomatic relationships between Spain and its former colonies. It ends with the Moderate Decade (1844-1854). The negative representation of Spanish American post-revolutionary history permit-ted the Moderado Party to legitimate its political projects in national, imperial and transatlantic spaces.
