Abstract

Cu-8wt%SmCo5 alloys were processed through mechanical milling, to be used in dielectromagnetic components for functional applications. Copper and SmCo5 powder mixtures were alloyed under argon atmosphere for 1 to 20h in a planetary ball mill to disperse ultrafine SmCo5 particles in the copper matrix with the aim to modified magnetic properties and hardness of these materials. Resulting powders were characterized as a function of milling time by means of X-ray diffraction, SEM and magnetic properties. Magnetic properties of Cu-8wt%SmCo5 powders attained their optimum values after milling for 10h. The milled alloy powders were consolidated by hot uniaxial pressing technique (HUP) at 923K for 2 h. The hot consolidation process resulted in well dense MMCs materials (alloyed powders for 10h milled) with adequate properties of 8. 2 g/cm3 in density, compression strength higher than 900 MPa, 95HRb in hardness and electrical properties up to 43% IACS. The variation of electric and magnetic properties and its dependence on the structure-strengthened change with milling time for this alloy are discussed.
