Abstract

This article analyzes to what extent the technophysio evolution (i.e. the positive synergism between accelerated technological changes and improvements in human physiology) occurred in Chile, as well as its timing. Compared to developed countries, Chile experienced a delayed and incomplete technophysio evolution. General and infant mortality fell sharply in Chile from the 1930s, at the same time that life expectancy markedly increased, reaching similar levels to those of developed countries, although with a lag of several decades. In addition, during the second half of the 20th century there was an increase of 5-6 cm in the height of Chileans, again with a certain time lag, but with divergence regarding developed countries. The diet of Chileans improved significantly, but particularly from the 1990s. Labor productivity has also increased in absolute terms during the 20th century, but not in relation to the productivity of developed countries. Chileans are taller than ever today, live longer lives, eat better and produce more, but there has been no convergence in labor productivity. This fact could be truncating a deepening of the technophysio evolution process: the second iteration of the synergism between technological changes and improvements in human physiology has not been fully achieved.
