Abstract
This review examines recent developments in organic phosphorus-based flame retardants (FRs) for improving the fire safety of polymeric materials. Particular emphasis is placed on their synthesis strategies, classification, flame-retardant mechanisms, and emerging applications in modern polymer systems. Organic phosphorus-based flame retardants have emerged as a prominent class of fire protection materials because of their versatile chemical structures, adaptability and high flame-retardant effectiveness. The incorporation of phosphorus containing moieties into polymers promotes several fire-retardant actions including inhibition of free-radical reactions in gas phase and the formation of protective char layers in the condensed phase, thereby improving overall fire resistance. Various phosphorus containing compounds such as phosphates, phosphonates, phosphinates, phosphine oxides and phosphazenes have been extensively investigated for advanced flame-retardant applications. In addition, thermoplastics thermosetting polymers and elastomers modified with organic phosphorus compounds exhibit enhanced flame resistance while maintaining low toxicity and better environmental sustainability. Recent developments in vitrimer based flame retardant materials have further expanded the field, owing to their recyclable and reprocessable characteristics. Compared with conventional halogen-containing and inorganic phosphorus flame retardants, organic phosphorus systems generally provide superior thermal stability, reduced smoke emission and lower environmental burden. Continued advances in molecular design, material processing, and sustainable synthesis are therefore essential to optimize the performance and scalability of organic phosphorus-based flame retardants for future high-performance and environmentally responsible polymer applications.
