Abstract
This article tries to understand the place of Raúl Silva Castro’s literary criticism in Chile’s cultural, social, and political history during the 20th century. To achieve this goal, we begin by reading in detail the articles he published in the 1920s in the magazine Claridad, in order to move forward in his ouvre in search of traces that may demonstrate his increasing commitment to Chile’s conservative thinking. Ultimately we believe that the concept of “conservative modernization” is key for understanding Silva Castro’s discourse and agenda as a critic.
