Abstract
The paper contrasts the function of punishment in the mobile prison and in the penitentiary of Santiago. These may seem similar on a factual level; in both cases the inmates remained locked up in an enclosure and were forced to work. However, each model shows a particular way of conceiving and applying criminal punishment, and through it, the vision that its proponents had of the social order and the punitive power of the State can be glimpsed. The objective of this comparative analysis is to highlight, on the one hand, the anachronism of the mobile prison in the development of the republican State in Chile, and on the other hand, to explain how legal institutions can acquire new meanings as the worldviews that underlie them mutate.
