Abstract

This article introduces the work of Juan Downey, in relation to his vision towards the understanding and explanation of contingent global phenomena. Many of his ideas are combined but this article's approach mainly refers to his critical view of modern society and the profound influence that technology has had in human life. It could be said that Downey's art shows an early and risky vision in comparison to its time (the 80's and 90's) and can be considered a milestone of the Post-Modern Era. As an architect he talks about the presence of energy in the systems that form our environmental and universal order. This view seems to gain relevance at the end of the 20th century and beginning of the 21st since it inspires Modern Design, which becomes versatile, fair, whole, and in harmony with its environment and the society in which it develops. According to Downey's vision, energy should be the driving force of any cyclic system since it adjusts and shapes our current dissociated world view due to the political, economical, and socio-cultural prevailing forces that shape our reality. Energy, then, goes above and beyond the barriers of reality of our environment.
