Abstract
The concept of emergent property in the context of systems thinking is discussed. The concept plays a key role in the natural sciences, since many of the important advances in these disciplines have come about historically through attempts to understand emergent properties that were not explicable in terms of existing theory. The emergent property can be said to be trivial since it merely confirms that the given arrangement of elements forms a system. It is also unproblematic, leaving no point for the observers to disagree.
